Down & Dirty Firefighting CD

Now in its third edition. With the IFA's continued partnership with the Illinois Fire Service Institute, the new Rural Water CD has just been released and should have just arrived at your fire stations. Please take a look and remember to register your copy with IFSI.

For years there has been a recognized need for a practical, standardized, hands-on, daily operations-focused training curriculum to support department training and to foster common tactics and techniques of fire fighting between departments. It is commonly understood that most fire department training is done at home in the department whether on weekly training sessions or as a part of a daily shift routine. In addition, mutual aid is a new statewide reality for working fires.

We recognize and fully support State certification as the standard for common fire fighting skills, but also realize that many firefighters are not able to complete a full certification program. This CD set is designed to augment your in-house training program. It is a supplement to and fully compatible with state certification, but it can also be used as a part of a stand-alone training program. Our hope is that this package will help firefighters do the work of protecting their communities more safely and effectively. You should have a copy of this training package in your department. Every department in the State received a copy free of charge by mail in December 2003. Please try it out and provide feedback on both how you are using it (so ideas can be shared with other departments) and how it can be improved. We do ask that users register your copy of the package. This would include not only a contact person from each Fire Department, but also any individual firefighter who obtains a copy. You can register online at: http://www.fsi.uiuc.edu/down_dirty/ and then follow the link to online registration. Copies of the program, however, may not be used for commercial purposes, including copies for use in programs where a student pays a fee for training and copies to be sold commercially.
